Industry experts Jim Prewitt and Jared Douglas Hiegel began their home building careers in different areas of the business, allowing each of them to learn and refine valuable skills.
Jim came through the ranks hands-on, starting as a general laborer eager to learn the trade. His diligence and drive were quickly recognized, advancing him into construction management and leadership roles. He co-founded a custom home building company in 1997, overseeing impressive achievements for 10 years prior to creating his own award-winning, highly successful company, Prewitt Custom Homes, in 2007.
Jared’s career began as a young man with a technical background who answered the call for data entry for a home building web-based company. The work piqued his curiosity about the industry, and he soon transitioned into a 15-year stint in building supply sales. The more Jared learned about home building, the more he wanted to know. In 2019, he followed his passion into building homes. The profession inspires and energizes him as he manages every aspect of the building process.
With ingrained commitments to providing exceptional quality, value, and service to their clients and associates, it was inevitable that these two individuals would meet. Upon crossing paths in 2010, they formed a professional friendship, each respecting the work ethic they saw in the other. In late 2022, Jim and Jared joined forces to create Prewitt-Douglas Custom Homes, a business partnership in which they are immensely proud.

Both Jared and I have built a reputation for excellence in craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail. Although building a home is intimidating and stressful for some, we strive to make the experience enjoyable and exciting. Via their combined experience, Prewitt-Douglas Custom Homes has delivered hundreds of homes, priced from the $400s to $2M+, to “family” throughout the towns and surrounding areas of Pittsboro, Raleigh, and Wake Forest, North Carolina. In addition to building custom homes in established neighborhoods, the majority of their homes are built-to-suit on scattered lots, especially “inside the beltline” in Raleigh. Jim and Jared thoroughly enjoy the building process in each scenario.
Jim is a Past President of the Raleigh-Wake County Home Builders Association (HBA), the largest HBA in the country. In addition to the Raleigh-Wake HBA, Prewitt-Douglas Custom Homes is a member of the Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties HBA, as well as the Triangle Builders Guild. Jim and Jared are married to extraordinary women, Amy Akins-Prewitt and Katharine Hiegel, and they are admirable fathers to their respective children. They take pride in being active members of the Triangle community as they continue the Prewitt-Douglas Custom Homes tradition of building homes of distinction.
